5 Oral Health Tips for a Great School Year!

Fall is almost here (although it may feel like it has already fallen!) so keeping those pearly whites of clean and healthy is a top priority.  Along with leading an active lifestyle and maintaining a good diet, these five oral health tips can help you keep the new school year on the right track, giving you that smile you always wanted!

Wake up. Floss. Brush. Repeat.

The American Dental Association recommends that you should floss at least once a day so you can catch the plaque and other material that your toothbrush cannot reach. Flossing also helps prevent gum disease and cavities, which can do serious damage to your oral health if left untreated. It doesn’t matter if you floss before or after you brush your teeth – as long as you do it, you’ll be ensuring you maintain that healthy smile!

Oral Health Tips

Avoid sodas and grab a water!

Craving a soda for lunch? Think again and grab that water glass! According to Colgate, those sugary yet delicious drinks are one of the leading causes of tooth decay. When you drink soda, the sugars and acids soften the enamel that surround your teeth. When your enamel grows weaker, it is easier to develop cavities and gum diseases. If you absolutely MUST have that cola, rinse your mouth out with water to clear the leftover sugars and acids. Your teeth will thank you for it.

Nuts

Almonds are the perfect snack for your lunch.

Almonds are not only tasty treats but they also help keep your chompers healthy. PR Web explains that almonds, along with other nuts have high vitamins and minerals that not only help your teeth, but your gums as well. Instead of grabbing chips for your lunch today, grab some almonds!

Stay fresh with fresh fruit.

You know what goes great with almonds? A fresh apple or pear! Colgate explains that although fruit has a lot of natural sugar, it still has positive effects when it comes in contact with your teeth. Similar to almonds, fresh fruit has multiple vitamins that improve and maintain your oral health, so don’t forget the classic rule about an apple a day!

SMILE!

Most importantly, have fun and smile! Staying positive decreases your stress levels and helps your overall health!
