We all have bad breath at some point during the day. It can be bad morning breath, after eating a garlic filled lunch, or at the end of a long day. So, how do we get rid of bad breath?
The obvious ways to get rid of bad breath are brushing and flossing our teeth. Brushing will get rid of bad breath for awhile, but flossing will get rid of bad breath even longer. When we brush our teeth we get remove the bacteria that are located on top or around our teeth. Most of the time when we brush we aren’t removing the bacteria that is between our teeth or found in the pockets around our teeth. This is where flossing becomes so important.
Flossing is the key to not only healthy gums, but to avoiding bad breath. We should floss our teeth a minimum to at least one time per day. Flossing is usually recommended before brushing and mostly at night before you go to bed. Flossing when done properly will remove the bacteria between the teeth and found deep in the pockets around teeth. It does not matter what kind of floss you use, but it does matter the technique you use when you floss. Ask your dentist to demonstrate the best flossing technique. Other alternatives to flossing can be using toothpicks or other devices go between teeth.
In addition to brushing and flossing to eliminate bad breath we can do other things throughout the day, like, chew xylitol containing gum or use mouthwashes. Xylitol is a naturally occurring sugar substitute, but unlike sugar, xylitol cannot be broken down by bacteria to form plaque. By chewing xylitol containing gum you not only reduce the bad breath causing plaque you are also reducing the potential for cavities. Some common xylitol containing gums are Trident, Orbits, Extra, etc. Check the label on the back for the ingredients. Mouthwashes like Listerine and ACT will act to eliminate bacteria in the mouth thus reducing the amount of bad breath causing plaque. You should look for mouthwashes that contain fluoride for some additional protection.
These are the most important ways things you can do to get rid of bad breath, but there are other things you can do that were not mentioned (such as having a healthy diet). If you do these things not only will you have a healthy mouth, but your will get rid of bad breath and feel more confident to speak face to face with people.
